Short Story Contest / Substack

Mission: Revive the art of the short story, support artists, and create something wonderful.

Payout: $100 base pay for the chosen story + 50% of subscription revenue. Potentially thousands of dollars if the substack gains many subscribers.

Timeline: Submit stories by the end of the month. Winner announced on the 15th. One story wins and receives the full payout.

Submission Details: Email submissions to shortstorystack@gmail.com. No fees. Submit in Microsoft Word or Google Doc format. Any genre, 6-10,000 words. Reprints are okay if you have distribution rights.

Art Inspiring Poetry / Rattle

Rattle magazine launched the Ekphrastic Challenge, where poets respond to visual art. The first challenge featured a photograph by Judy Keown, receiving 266 entries. Due to its popularity, it became a monthly series. Visual artists can submit their work until December. Poets can find a new piece of art each month to inspire their poetry, with one month to submit. Two winners, chosen by the artist and Rattle’s editor, receive online publication and $100 each. February’s image is by Walter Arnold.

Victor Howes Prize in Poetry

The Victor Howes Prize in Poetry, established by the New England Poetry Club, honors poet Victor Howes. It is open to undergraduate students enrolled in 2-year or 4-year programs at New England colleges or universities who have a demonstrated interest in poetry. The prize includes $500 and an invitation to read at the Student Awards Reading at the Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site. The submission period is from January 20 to March 20, requiring four original poems, a statement on what draws the applicant to poetry, and a faculty contact name and email. Lancaster Playwriting Prize

The Lancaster Playwriting Prize 2025 is open for submissions from writers based in Lancashire and the North-West UK, aged 18 and over. The competition, organized by The Dukes theatre and Lancaster University, has a Gothic theme this year. The top three submissions will receive a public reading of a 15-20 minute section of their work, with the winner receiving £1000 and a trophy, and runners-up receiving £250 each. Scripts can be full-length plays with a maximum of four cast members. The deadline for submissions is February 24, 2025.
